Flat Pack Wardrobe Assembly in Tennyson — Main Bedroom IKEA Build

Flat Pack Wardrobe Assembly in Tennyson — Main Bedroom IKEA Build

There’s a particular look people give you when they open the door and there’s a flat pack wardrobe still in its boxes — half the pieces fanned out across the bedroom floor, the instruction booklet dog-eared on page three. Relief, mostly. Sometimes a little embarrassment. “I had a crack at it myself,” this Tennyson client told me with a grin, pointing at a side panel that had been started and then very deliberately put back down.

No judgement here. IKEA makes great products, but assembling a full wardrobe for a main bedroom is a proper afternoon of work. Get a couple of the cam locks in the wrong sequence and you’re pulling the whole thing apart again. It happens to everyone.

The Job in Tennyson

This was a main bedroom wardrobe build for a lovely couple in Tennyson, just quietly one of the more underrated riverside suburbs south of the city. They’d purchased a large IKEA PAX-style wardrobe — the kind with the full-height doors and interior rail and shelf configuration — and needed it assembled and secured properly against the wall.

The bedroom itself had floating timber floors and freshly painted walls, so the priority was getting this thing built clean and square without any scuffs or damage along the way. That meant working carefully, taking the time to lay everything out before a single peg went in, and double-checking the level as each section came together.

Why Proper Assembly Actually Matters

Flat pack furniture gets a reputation for being flimsy, and honestly, a lot of that reputation comes down to poor assembly rather than poor product. When a wardrobe isn’t square, the doors never hang right. When the back panel isn’t properly seated, the whole unit can rack under load. And when it’s not fixed to the wall — especially a tall wardrobe — it becomes a real safety issue, particularly in homes with kids.

This one got the full treatment: assembled panel by panel in the correct sequence, all hardware checked and tightened, the unit levelled on the floor, and then wall-anchored using appropriate fixings into the stud behind the plaster. The doors were hung and adjusted until the gaps were even top to bottom. Small detail, big difference in how the finished result looks and feels.

The Finished Result

Once it was all together and the client’s clothes were going in, the bedroom looked genuinely transformed. A good wardrobe does that — it brings order to a space that previously felt a bit chaotic. The couple were happy, the floors were scratch-free, and nobody had to spend their Saturday night re-reading Swedish assembly instructions by lamplight.

Flat Pack Assembly Around Brisbane’s Southside

I cover Tennyson and the surrounding southside suburbs regularly — Yeronga, Rocklea, Moorooka, across to Annerley and beyond. If you’ve got flat pack furniture that needs assembling, whether it’s a wardrobe, a bookcase, a TV unit or a whole room fit-out, I’m happy to take it on.

No job is too straightforward. Sometimes the most useful thing a handyman can do is save you a full day of frustration and make sure the end result is actually built to last.
